The River Valley Bike Trail follows the Connecticut River southbound to the shore, beginning in the greater Hartford region. The Connecticut River is the longest river in New England from Canada to the Long Island Sound while running through 4 of the 6 New England states.
The river valley holds many beautiful stops along the way including Hamburg Cove in Lyme, the boardwalk in Niantic, and the charming village of Essex. In Connecticut’s center shoreline there are several opportunities for dining on the water, side trails and bikeways, and scenic wide-open Long Island Sound views. Towns of interest are Wethersfield, Glastonbury, Middletown, Haddam, East Haddam, Lyme, Niantic, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, Essex, and Deep River, CT.

This driving/ biking route was adopted from the Connecticut Barns Trail, River Valley. Several historic Connecticut barns are also featured along the CT B&B Bike Trail. For more information on the CT Barns Trail visit www.connecticutbarns.org

The Greater Hartford Bike Trail starts at the Hill Stead Museum, a country homestead from 1901 that houses a unique collection of turn-of-the-century art. The route travels north through the Farmington River Valley, featuring portions of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail- a multi-use trail that runs along abandoned rail corridors and canal tow paths. There are several stops along the way if you like to switch gears for a kayaking break or enjoy an afternoon canoe trip. Featured towns include Farmington, Collinsville, Simsbury, and Windsor.

The North Central Connecticut Bike Trail hugs the boarders of CT and MA. It begins at the Tunix State Forest, travels through the Shenipsit State Forest, and then ends at the Nipmuck State Forest. This northern route features trees galore, perfect for a fall bike ride. Featured towns include North Granby, Suffield, Somers, and Stafford Springs.
